Many people believe that they can get away with one visit to the dentist every year or even a year or two between appointments. The fact is, these exams and routine cleanings are very important to oral health. The initial oral comprehensive exam is a no-risk way to learn the status of your oral health. In order to maintain optimal oral health, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you make regular dental visits, at intervals determined by your dentist at Texan Smile.
During a dental exam, your dentist will check for signs of gum disease and cavities and evaluate your oral health. X-rays are usually taken to evaluate that which cannot be seen during the visual exam. Oral issues like gum disease do not present symptoms like health issues in other areas of the body until they are fairly advanced. This is why dental exams are important – only dentists can examine your mouth to detect potential conditions that can otherwise go unnoticed. Catching problems (like cavities and gingivitis) in their early stages makes treatment much easier and less costly. Our office uses advanced technology like digital radiographs, intraoral cameras, and Carivu for an efficient and comfortable experience for all of our patients.
A regular dental cleaning is done in the absence of gum disease, and it is usually performed after the dental exam. The patient is educated on the proper methods of brushing and flossing after the cleaning. The patient is instructed to return for periodic evaluation and cleaning, with the frequency determined by the dentist based on your oral health.
After your cleaning, Dr. Xavier will come in to discuss any issues that were detected, along with treatment options. If no issues were detected, she will simply give you a clean bill of health!
