Dental crowns (also called “caps”) completely cover a tooth. They can be used for both restorative and cosmetic purposes, and they can be made of ceramic, porcelain, resin, or stainless steel. Dr. Xavier at Texan Smile is proud to provide dental crown services to her patients in the Sugar Land area.
A dental crown or cap helps to hold together a weak or cracked tooth, restore a broken or severely worn tooth, cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth and support a tooth with a large filling. All-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused metal crowns, and zirconia crowns are frequently used these days. After a complete evaluation, your dentist will discuss the suitable options for you. Zirconia crowns are most popular as they are more durable and natural-looking. At Texan Smile, we use CEREC Omnicam digital impression technology to obtain all of our impressions. These digital impressions are superior to conventional impressions in that the accuracy of the impressions results in a better-fitting restoration, less discomfort to the patient by not having impression material in their mouth, and, as images are transferred to lab digitally, turnaround time is reduced.
It usually takes two appointments to have a dental crown placed with Dr. Xavier. During the first appointment, the tooth must be prepared to receive the crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, impressions will be taken of it and the surrounding teeth. These will be sent to a dental laboratory, which will use the impressions to create the crown custom for each patient. A temporary crown may be placed on the prepared tooth while waiting for the permanent crown to come in. When the permanent crown has been completed, it will be placed during a second appointment. The temporary crown will be removed and the permanent one added on. Adjustments will be made as necessary to achieve the perfect fit and bite for each patient.
