About Dentures

All teeth will naturally wear down over time, becoming more susceptible to damage and decay. A lot of factors including age, bad oral hygiene habits and other health factors can affect oral health and could lead to tooth loss. If this does happen, there are several options available for replacing your lost teeth. When there is considerable tooth loss, dental prosthetics called dentures are one of the most common solutions for patients seeking to restore their smiles. Dr. Xavier at Texan Smile provides both partial and full dentures, depending upon each patient’s specific needs.

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that can be used to replace a line of missing teeth. They are designed to look like natural teeth and the surrounding tissues, restoring the smile’s appearance as well as the teeth’s functionality. Depending on how many teeth are being replaced, complete or partial dentures can be made. This normally requires consultation with Dr. Xavier and couple of appointments to ensure that the dentures fit properly and patient is absolutely comfortable with them. During the first appointment, accurate molds and measurements will be taken in order to create dentures that are customized to you personally. The dentures may require several separate appointments with Dr. Xavier to make any necessary adjustments to achieve the right shape, color, and fit for each patient.

Getting new dentures

Patients will take some time to adapt to dentures and Dr. Xavier, through multiple consultations and visits, works with the patients to provide them a complete understanding about using dentures and what to expect during/after the procedure. The process from start to finish usually is completed in 3 – 4 visits. Dr. Xavier and team makes sure to provide the patient ample time to understand about dentures and adjust to using dentures. Before impression can be taken for dentures, existing teeth affected by decay and gum disease needs to be removed. Then impressions are taken for the immediate denture and once the immediate dentures are made, they are placed. This step can be done for partial and full dentures. Immediate dentures need relining as healing progresses. Usually 6 – 8 weeks are required for complete healing. New impression is taken after healing is complete  and this new impression is used for the permanent denture
