About Dental Crowns
Types of Dental Crowns
Crowns are an ideal option for cases involving cracked teeth, Root Canal treated tooth and failed large fillings. A dental crown or cap helps to hold together a weak or cracked tooth, restore a broken or severely worn tooth, cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth and support a tooth with a large filling. All-ceramic crowns, porcelain-fused metal crowns, and zirconia crowns are frequently used these days. After a complete evaluation, your dentist will discuss the suitable options for you. Zirconia crowns are most popular as they are more durable and natural-looking.
When are dental crowns recommended?
Large fillings can weaken the tooth leading to cracks and requiring additional extensive procedures to fix it.In the case of a cracked tooth, depending on how deep the crack is, the tooth might require a crown and/or root canal. In some extreme cases, if the crack has extended to the root, then the tooth is not savable. It’s important to diagnose the crack and protect the tooth with a crown to prevent a possible extraction. Comparatively, a Root canal treated tooth is brittle and a crown is recommended to prevent the fracture of that tooth.
Dental Crowns Procedure
It usually takes two appointments to have a dental crown placed. During the first appointment, the tooth is prepared to receive the crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, Dr. Xavier and team will take the impressions of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. These impressions will be sent to the lab, were the team will use the impressions to create the custom crowns. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed on the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is being readied. When the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent one is placed and this usually happens during the second appointment. Required adjustments are made to achieve the perfect fit and bite.
At Texan Smile, we use CEREC Omnicam digital impression technology to obtain all of our impressions. These digital impressions are superior to conventional impressions in that the accuracy of the impressions results in a better-fitting restoration, less discomfort to the patient by not having impression material in their mouth, and, as images are transferred to lab digitally, turnaround time is reduced.
